Dundee Marine Research Charters

Andrew Johnson, aka "Dundee" has had the please of being the skipper and vessel provider for many whale research expeditions over the years and has a thirst to do more. Dundee has worked with the MIM Network (Marine Industry Mentorhsip) and the Fat Whale Project. The image above shows Brodee Lowe from MIM on the left and Dr. Grace Russel from Fat Whale on the right - two fabulous women dedicated to understanding more about these giants of the sea.

We will provide a work platform with a highly experienced and knowledgeable boat operator. Our 9m stable catamaran is ideal for research charters - with side dive door and rear dive ladder for teams to utilise for any projects they need, including filming, diving, drones and data collection.

Drones

Drones are playing an increasingly important role in whale research in South West Western Australia, allowing researchers to safely collect high-resolution aerial images to identify individual whales, monitor pod size and behaviour, and measure body condition using non-invasive photogrammetry. This technology provides valuable insights into whale health, growth and mother–calf relationships while minimising disturbance to the animals and supporting long-term conservation and management of species.

Diving

Research scuba diving supports whale conservation in South West Western Australia by enabling scientists to deploy, maintain and recover underwater acoustic monitoring equipment and other marine research instruments. These underwater surveys help researchers better understand the marine environment and soundscape that whales rely on during their annual migration through Geographe Bay and the South West coast.
